Bridging the gap

Gender diversity is correlated with both profitability and value creation, says McKinsey & Company. For example,  top-quartile companies on executive-level gender diversity worldwide had a 21 per cent likelihood of outperforming their fourth-quartile industry peers on EBIT margin, with a 27 per cent likelihood of outperforming fourth-quartile peers on longer-term value creation, as measured using an economic-profit (EP) margin.

We listen in on some of Maritime’s leaders, as they look at the following:

  • Is the lack of industry-wide data on gender diversity an indication of how little importance is attached to it?
  • Now that there is global evidence that gender diversity within senior leadership is correlated with both profitability and value creation should gathering that data be a priority? If so who needs to be involved?
  • What initiatives exist in your own organisations to champion diversity and how are you measuring their impact?
  • Creating female talent pipelines in companies requires male engagement. Have women in maritime concentrated too much on networking with each other outside organisations instead of engaging within their organisations to drive change?
  • The collaborative nature of the new Digital Economy and the growth of AI might favour the leadership of the “female archetype” – flexible, open, distributed – rather than the “male archetype” – competitive, risk-taking, controlling. Could more women leaders not just improve margins but also accelerate digital transformation within maritime companies?
