AET, a subsidiary of Malaysia’s top shipping line MISC, has partnered with Fleetzero to retrofit one of its lightering support vessels (LSVs) with a plug-in hybrid-electric system. This project aims to create the world's longest-range hybrid-electric vessel.

By primarily operating on battery power, the retrofitted LSV is projected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 82% on a tank-to-wake basis compared to traditional LSVs. The switch is expected to reduce fuel consumption while lowering maintenance costs, underscoring AET’s commitment to sustainable maritime solutions.

The pilot project shows a significant step toward decarbonisation for AET and possibly MISC’s larger fleet. The vessel is anticipated to avoid approximately 1,220 tons of greenhouse gases annually, showcasing the scalability of this innovative hybrid technology.

According to Zahid Osman, president and group CEO of MISC, this project not only emphasises the company’s environmental ambitions but also serves as a test for future fleet-wide deployment, potentially revolutionising operations with greener energy alternatives.
