Tuas Mega Port Aims to Handle 65M Containers with Automation Solutions
Source: New Atlas
Singapore's impressive Tuas mega port is steadily advancing towards its goal of becoming the world's largest automated container terminal. Since commencing operations in September 2022, the port has already achieved a significant milestone, successfully handling 10 million containers.
This initial phase, currently operating with eight berths and 500 staff, is just the beginning of a four-phase development project. Upon completion in the 2040s, the facility is projected to handle 65 million shipping containers annually, surpassing Shanghai's current capacity and consolidating all of Singapore's port operations into one highly efficient location.
At the heart of Tuas port's operation is a sophisticated suite of automation technologies. A fleet of over 200 electric automated guided vehicles (AGVs) transports containers autonomously across the terminal, guided by a central management system and monitored from a remote command centre. These AGVs can operate for up to six hours on a single 20-minute charge.
The entire operation is overseen by a digital twin of the facility, with plans to integrate a "Next Generation Vessel Traffic Management System" that uses AI and satellites for real-time traffic monitoring. This move towards automation not only boosts efficiency but also significantly enhances the port's environmental credentials. The use of electrified equipment is expected to cut carbon emissions by roughly 50% compared to traditional diesel-powered machinery, supporting Singapore's commitment to greener maritime logistics.
